Proud Sponsors of the Long-Term Farm Stored Fruit Competition

Having obtained planning permission for many cutting edge cold stores, Bloomfields are delighted to sponsor the Gala Class at this years Long Term Stored Fruit Competition, which was judged yesterday, Thursday 27th February 2026, at the Apple Growers Association in Horsmonden. The competition showcases the finest examples of farm stored fruit, celebrating skill, dedication and the art of long-term storage.

This year, the competition overall saw 46 entries across multiple classes, with a total of 12 exhibitors. While predominantly Kent based, the competition is growing nationally, and it was exciting to welcome this year two new exhibitors from outside the South East entering for the first time.

The judging panel for this year’s competition comprised Caroline Ashdown from Allied Growers, Ryan Williams from Agrii, and Jack Roberts from Landseer. Alongside visual inspection, the judges use a Fruit Texture Analyser to assess the quality of the fruit more precisely. In simple terms, the machine “bites” or presses into the fruit to measure how firm, ripe and crisp it is. By gently penetrating the flesh, it records the resistance of the fruit, which then provides an accurate reading of texture and how well it has maintained its condition during long-term storage.

The judges also carefully examine the cleanliness and overall health of the fruit. This includes checking for any internal storage disorders such as bruising, browning or rotting, as well as external blemishes. Together, these assessments ensure that the winning entries not only look good but demonstrate excellent storage management and deliver the eating quality expected of top-class farm-stored fruit.

Director Tom Ogden says “This has been a class we have sponsored for some years now and which celebrates the many great achievements of this nations farmers in growing and then storing fruit to then make it available for us all to eat through longer periods of the year whilst reducing dependence on fruit being imported.  A brilliant achievement and good luck to all who entered.  We look forward to the winners being announced.”
